Properly Installing Your Metal Roof

If you have decided to replace your old roof withmetal roofing and have chosen to install the roof on your own, here are some tips to help you get it done properly.

Preparing for Installation

Before you get started on your installation, you need to be prepared. The first thing to do is measure your roof.It maybe easiest to start at the bottom and carefully work your way to the top.Once you have your measurements, you can figure out what materials you need. Then you can order your materials. You likely want your roof to last, so ordering good-quality metal roofing materials from a reputable retailer is highly recommended. You will also want to make sure you have all the tools and equipment needed to install the roof, and if not, then you will want to order those as well.

Once you have your materials and are ready to start working, you need to get the work site ready. You will want to make sure to have a large trash bin to dispose of the old roofing, tools accessible, and a durable ladder available. You can then carefully remove your old roofing. It is possible to install metal roofing directly onto your old roofing, but it is not recommended.

Doing the Installation

To begin the installation, you will want to start with using 1-¼-inch nails to secure the metal edging or flashing around the perimeter, covering the gutter edge. You can then install your metal panels, starting from the longest peak. The panel should be perpendicular to the edge and overhang the eave.Once the metal panels are in place, you can install flashing, similar to the edging, at the joints where two sections meet.Be sure to cut the metal properly and use end caps as needed.Once your installation is finished, make sure everything is smooth and nothing is loose.

If you have accomplished all of these things, your new metal roofing should be ready to use. If properly maintained, it should protect your home for many years to come.
